कैसा / कैसी / कैसे

Asking How or What Kind

Level 1Sounds Like kaisā, kaisī aura kaisē

खाना कैसा है? asks How is the food? and आप कैसे हैं? asks How are you?

How It Works

कैसा asks what something is like. It changes like an adjective to match the noun you ask about.

FormUseExample
कैसाmasculine, oneखाना कैसा है?
कैसीfeminineचाय कैसी है?
कैसेmasculine, more than oneये आम कैसे हैं?

How are you? follows the same rule. Ask a man आप कैसे हैं? and a woman आप कैसी हैं? The form is कैसे for a man because आप takes plural forms. With a friend, say तुम कैसे हो? or तुम कैसी हो?

कैसे has a second job: it asks how something is done. In this use it never changes: स्टेशन कैसे जाते हैं? (How do you get to the station?), यह कैसे बनाते हैं? (How do you make this?)

To choose, ask yourself what you want to know. If it is what a thing or person is like, match the noun. If it is the way to do something, use कैसे.
