Shared Hindi and Urdu Grammar

Level 5Sounds Like hindī-urdū kā sājhā vyākaraṇa

Hindi and Urdu use the same grammar in everyday speech: मैं घर जा रहा हूँ is the same sentence in both.

How It Works

Hindi and Urdu grew from the same spoken language of north India. In everyday conversation they are so close that speakers understand each other easily, and films and songs reach both audiences.

SharedDifferent
Pronouns, postpositions, verb tenses, agreement, ने, word orderScript: Devanagari for Hindi, a Perso-Arabic script for Urdu
Everyday words of every origin: किताब, जवाब, घर, पानीFormal words: Hindi uses Sanskrit-based words such as उत्तर and प्रश्न, while Urdu uses Persian and Arabic ones

The difference grows with formality. A chat about food sounds the same in both. A news bulletin or a legal notice can be hard for the other side to follow, because the formal vocabulary has split.

Two practical points for learners:

  • Many common Hindi words came from Persian and Arabic: किताब, जवाब, सही, ज़रूरी, दफ़्तर. They are normal Hindi. In Devanagari, a dot under some letters (the nukta) marks sounds from these words: ज़, फ़, ख़.
  • Understanding spoken Urdu does not mean you can read it. The script is different and has to be learned separately.

This course teaches Standard Hindi in Devanagari.

Examples (4)

  1. मैं घर जा रहा हूँ।

    I'm going home.

This sentence is the same in Hindi and Urdu; only the script differs.

  2. यह मेरी किताब है।

    This is my book.

किताब came from Arabic but is everyday Hindi, and मेरी agrees with it as usual.

  3. आपका जवाब सही है।

    Your answer is right.

जवाब and सही are shared words used every day in Hindi.

  4. कृपया अपना उत्तर यहाँ लिखिए।

    Please write your answer here.

Formal Hindi prefers उत्तर to जवाब; the grammar stays the same.
