बड़ा घर, बड़ी गाड़ी, बड़े कमरे: the adjective's ending follows the noun.

How It Works

Adjectives ending in -आ change to agree with their noun.

Use -आ for one masculine noun, -ए for several, and -ई for every feminine noun. Feminine plurals still take -ई: बड़ी किताबें.

The adjective agrees even when it comes after the noun, before है: कमरा बड़ा है, गाड़ी बड़ी है, कमरे बड़े हैं.

Common changing adjectives include अच्छा (good), छोटा (small), नया (new), पुराना (old), ठंडा (cold) and गंदा (dirty). नया gives नई and नए.

Before a postposition, a masculine singular adjective also takes -ए: बड़ा कमरा, but बड़े कमरे में (in the big room). Here बड़े does not mean more than one.

Adjectives that do not end in -आ, such as लाल (red) and सुंदर (beautiful), never change. A few -आ words, such as बढ़िया (great), never change either: बढ़िया खाना, बढ़िया चाय.

    This is a big room.

    बड़ा matches masculine कमरा.

  2. यह बड़ी किताब है।

    This is a big book.

    बड़ी matches feminine किताब.

  3. ये बड़े कमरे हैं।

    These are big rooms.

    बड़े matches masculine plural कमरे.

  4. यहाँ बड़ी दुकानें हैं।

    There are big shops here.

    Feminine plural दुकानें still takes बड़ी.

  5. किताब बड़े कमरे में है।

    The book is in the big room.

    Before में, बड़ा becomes बड़े even for one room.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the -आ form with a feminine noun.

    उसकी गाड़ी बहुत बड़ा है।
    उसकी गाड़ी बहुत बड़ी है।

    गाड़ी is feminine, so the adjective ends in -ई.
