यहाँ / वहाँ

Here and There

Level 1Sounds Like yahām̐ aura vahām̐

यहाँ (here) and वहाँ (there) pair with the question word कहाँ (where).

How It Works

यहाँ means here and वहाँ means there. They match यह (this) and वह (that): यहाँ is near the speaker and वहाँ is farther away. The question word in the same set is कहाँ (where).

HereThereWhere?
यहाँवहाँकहाँ
यहाँ से: from hereवहाँ से: from thereकहाँ से: from where
यहाँ तक: up to hereवहाँ तक: up to thereकहाँ तक: how far

Put them in the place slot, before the verb: बच्चे वहाँ खेल रहे हैं (The children are playing there). With जाना and आना no extra word is needed: यहाँ आओ (Come here).

They already mean in this place and in that place, so never add में after them.

In speech you will also hear इधर and उधर, which mean this way and that way. They often replace यहाँ and वहाँ: इधर आओ (Come over here).

Add ही for right here and right there: यहीं, वहीं.

Examples (5)

  1. मैं यहाँ रहता हूँ।

    I live here.

    यहाँ goes before the verb.

  2. यहाँ आओ।

    Come here.

With आना, no extra word is needed.

  3. बच्चे वहाँ खेल रहे हैं।

The children are playing over there.

वहाँ points to a place away from the speaker.

  4. स्टेशन यहाँ से दूर है।

The station is far from here.

    यहाँ से means from here.

  5. वहाँ बहुत भीड़ है।

    It's very crowded there.

वहाँ comes first, like any place phrase.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding में after यहाँ or वहाँ.

    मैं यहाँ में रहता हूँ।
    मैं यहाँ रहता हूँ।

यहाँ already means in this place, so it takes no में.
