Him, Her and Them with को

Level 2Sounds Like usē, unhēṁ aura hamēṁ

(I know him).

How It Works

Many pronouns have two forms that mean exactly the same thing: a long form with को and a short form ending in -े or -ें. Both are used every day.

PronounWith कोShort form

Use them for every job को does: the person you see or know (मैं उसे जानता हूँ), the person who receives something (उसे पानी दो), and the person who feels or needs something (उन्हें भूख लगी है, हमें जाना है).

उन्हें and इन्हें also refer politely to one person, so उन्हें बताइए can mean tell him or tell her. मैं and तुम have short forms too (मुझे, तुम्हें), but आप has only आपको.

The short form already contains को, so never add को after it. With any other postposition, use उस, इस, उन, इन or हम: उससे, उनके लिए, इसमें.

Examples (5)

    They really like tea.

उन्हें means उनको; it can also be a polite he or she.

We have to go to Delhi tomorrow.

हमें means हमको and marks who has to go.

    Put this on the table.

इसे means इसको and points to a specific thing.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding को to a short form.

Use one or the other: मैंने उसे देखा or मैंने उसको देखा.

  • Using the short form with another postposition.

Only को has a short form. With से, पर, में and the rest, use उस, इस, उन or इन: उससे, उन पर.
