मेज़ पर किताब है
Saying What Is Where
Hindi says on the table a book is: मेज़ पर किताब है.
How It Works
English uses there is and there are. Hindi uses word order: place first, then the thing, then है or हैं.
| Place | Thing | Verb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| मेज़ पर | किताब | है | There is a book on the table. |
| कमरे में | दो बिस्तर | हैं | There are two beds in the room. |
The verb agrees with the thing: one thing takes है and several take हैं.
The order changes the meaning a little. मेज़ पर किताब है brings in a new book: there is a book on the table. किताब मेज़ पर है talks about a book you both know: the book is on the table. Hindi has no word for the, so the order shows whether you mean a new thing or one you both already know.
For there is not, put नहीं before है: फ़्रिज में दूध नहीं है. In quick speech the है is often dropped: फ़्रिज में दूध नहीं.
To ask, put क्या at the start: क्या यहाँ पास में एटीएम है? (Is there an ATM near here?)

How It Connects
Learn This First
A there-is sentence opens with a place phrase and ends with है, so it needs postpositions and the present of to be.
