जाना as a Helper Verb

Compound Verbs with जाना

Level 3Sounds Like jānā sahāyaka kriyā kē rūpa mēṁ

Stem plus जाना shows a change or completion: वह सो गया (He fell asleep).

How It Works

With जाना, the focus is on a change or a result. वह सो रहा है says someone is sleeping; वह सो गया says he fell asleep. दूध गिर गया says the milk spilled and is now on the floor.

HindiEnglish
सो जानाfall asleep
गिर जानाfall, spill
भूल जानाforget
ठंडा हो जानाget cold
खा जानाeat up

होना plus जाना is very common for becoming: खाना ठंडा हो गया (The food has gone cold), वह बड़ा हो गया (He has grown up).

जाना never takes ने. So even a verb that has an object keeps a plain subject: वह सारा खाना खा गया (He ate up all the food). The verb agrees with that subject.

Compound verbs are mostly used in positive sentences. In a plain negative statement, use the plain verb: वह कल रात नहीं सोया. Warnings can keep जाना: भूल मत जाना (Don't forget).

Do not confuse this with the passive, which uses the past form before जाना: खाना खाया गया (The food was eaten).

Common Mistakes

  • Adding ने with a जाना compound.

    उसने सारा खाना खा गया।
    वह सारा खाना खा गया।

The last verb, जाना, decides. It never takes ने.

  • Keeping the compound in a negative sentence.

    बच्ची नहीं सो गई।
    बच्ची नहीं सोई।

In a plain negative statement, drop जाना and use the simple past: नहीं सोई.
