अतः means therefore. It is the formal partner of इसलिए.

How It Works

अतः connects a reason to a conclusion, like therefore or hence. It belongs to formal writing: letters, notices, reports, essays and speeches.

After a reason in the same sentence: सभी सदस्य सहमत थे, अतः प्रस्ताव पारित हो गया।
At the start of a new sentence that draws a conclusion: अतः यह निर्णय लिया गया।
As the partner of चूँकि: चूँकि सड़क की मरम्मत चल रही है, अतः यह मार्ग बंद रहेगा।

The everyday word is इसलिए. A more formal variant, अतएव, means the same and is mostly found in older or legal writing.
