के पास

Having Something

Level 1Sounds Like kē pāsa

X के पास Y है says X has Y: the owner takes के पास and the thing owned is the subject.

How It Works

Hindi has no everyday verb for to have. For things, you say the thing is with the owner: मेरे पास एक साइकिल है (I have a bicycle).

OwnerWith के पास
मैंमेरे पास
हमहमारे पास
तुमतुम्हारे पास
आपआपके पास
वहउसके पास
वेउनके पास
रीमारीमा के पास

The thing owned is the subject, so it decides है or हैं: मेरे पास एक किताब है, मेरे पास तीन किताबें हैं. The owner's gender makes no difference.

Use के पास for things you own or have with you: money, a phone, a car, time. For family members, use का, की or के instead: मेरे दो भाई हैं (I have two brothers). For illness and feelings, use को: मुझे बुख़ार है.

के पास also keeps its basic meaning, near: स्टेशन के पास एक होटल है (There's a hotel near the station).
