डेढ़ is 1½ and ढाई is 2½. साढ़े adds ½, सवा adds ¼ and पौने takes ¼ away: साढ़े तीन (3½).

How It Works

साढ़े is used from three upward. For 1½ and 2½, always say डेढ़ and ढाई.

The same words work with सौ, हज़ार and लाख: डेढ़ सौ (150), ढाई हज़ार (2,500), साढ़े तीन लाख (350,000), सवा सौ (125).

They are very common with clock times: सवा दो बजे (2:15), डेढ़ बजे (1:30), ढाई बजे (2:30), साढ़े छह बजे (6:30), पौने आठ बजे (7:45).

ट्रेन साढ़े छह बजे चलेगी।
The train leaves at half past six.
साढ़े adds a half: 6:30.
मुझे ढाई किलो आलू चाहिए।
I need two and a half kilos of potatoes.
ढाई is 2½.
फ़िल्म डेढ़ घंटे की है।
The film is an hour and a half long.
डेढ़ is 1½.
क्लास सवा नौ बजे शुरू होती है।
Class starts at a quarter past nine.
सवा adds a quarter: 9:15.
हम पौने आठ बजे मिलेंगे।
We'll meet at a quarter to eight.
पौने takes a quarter away: 7:45.

Using साढ़े with one or two.
मैं साढ़े दो बजे आऊँगा।
मैं ढाई बजे आऊँगा।
Half past two is ढाई, and half past one is डेढ़. साढ़े starts at three.
