इसलिए

Showing a Result

Level 2Sounds Like isali'ē

Reason, then इसलिए, then result: बस देर से आई, इसलिए मैं देर से पहुँचा.

How It Works

इसलिए means so, therefore or that's why. It comes from इस (this) and लिए (for), so it means for this reason.

Pattern: reason, इसलिए + result.

The same idea can be said two ways:

HindiMeaning
बस देर से आई, इसलिए मैं देर से पहुँचा।The bus came late, so I arrived late.
मैं देर से पहुँचा क्योंकि बस देर से आई।I arrived late because the bus came late.

With इसलिए the reason comes first. With क्योंकि the result comes first.

Each half keeps its own verb and time, so a present reason can lead to a future result: मुझे कल काम है, इसलिए मैं नहीं आऊँगा.

Do not confuse इसलिए with इसके लिए, which means for this or for him: यह तोहफ़ा इसके लिए है (This gift is for him).

Examples (5)

  1. बारिश हो रही है, इसलिए हम घर पर हैं।

It's raining, so we're at home.

The part after इसलिए is the result.

  2. मुझे भूख लगी थी, इसलिए मैंने समोसा खाया।

I was hungry, so I ate a samosa.

The reason comes first, then इसलिए.

  3. मुझे काम है, इसलिए मैं नहीं आ सकता।

I have work to do, so I can't come.

Each half has its own verb.

  4. बस देर से आई, इसलिए मैं देर से पहुँचा।

The bus came late, so I arrived late.

A past reason leads to a past result.

  5. रीमा बीमार है, इसलिए आज स्कूल नहीं आई।

Reema is ill, so she didn't come to school today.

A present reason can explain a past event.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the result before इसलिए.

    मैं देर से पहुँचा, इसलिए बस देर से आई।
    बस देर से आई, इसलिए मैं देर से पहुँचा।

इसलिए introduces the result, so the reason must come before it. The wrong order says your lateness made the bus late.
