मुझे बुख़ार है
Experiencing Feelings and States
For many feelings and states, the person takes को and the feeling is the subject: मुझे बुख़ार है, मुझे भूख लगी है.
How It Works
For many feelings and illnesses, Hindi does not say I have or I am. It puts the person in the को form and makes the feeling the subject: मुझे बुख़ार है, literally to me there is a fever.
With है:
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| मुझे बुख़ार है। | I have a fever. |
| मुझे ज़ुकाम है। | I have a cold. |
| मुझे चिंता है। | I'm worried. |
| मुझे उम्मीद है। | I hope so. |
With लगना: hunger, thirst and feeling cold. मुझे भूख लगी है (I'm hungry), मुझे प्यास लगी है (I'm thirsty), मुझे ठंड लग रही है (I feel cold).
With आना: feelings that come over you. मुझे नींद आ रही है (I'm sleepy), उसे ग़ुस्सा आया (he got angry).
The verb agrees with the feeling. भूख is feminine, so a man also says लगी. Some states still use मैं as the subject: मैं ख़ुश हूँ (I'm happy), मैं बीमार हूँ (I'm ill).
