Everyday Hindi is what you hear at home, in shops and in most films. It freely uses words from Persian and Arabic (दफ़्तर, ज़रूरी) and from English (स्टेशन, फ़ोन).

Formal Hindi appears in news, government notices, textbooks and speeches. Besides Sanskrit-based words, it likes passive verbs (किया गया), noun phrases such as आवेदन की स्वीकृति (approval of the application), and polite -एँ forms (कृपया ध्यान दें).

Neither register is more correct. A formal word in a chat with friends sounds stiff, and a very casual word in an official letter sounds careless. Learn the everyday word first, then its formal partner, so you can understand both.
