के बजाय / की जगह

Instead of

Level 4Sounds Like kē bajāya aura kī jagaha

के बजाय and की जगह mean instead of or in place of.

How It Works

Both phrases name something you are not choosing, and the sentence then gives the choice: चाय के बजाय पानी पीजिए। (Drink water instead of tea.)

They work like other two-word postpositions. The noun before them takes its form before a postposition, and pronouns take the possessive form:

With a nounWith a pronoun
चाय के बजायमेरे बजाय, आपके बजाय
रीमा की जगहमेरी जगह, उसकी जगह

जगह (place) is feminine, so it takes की. बजाय takes के, though in speech you will also hear की बजाय.

For an action, use the infinitive in its -ने form: टीवी देखने के बजाय किताब पढ़ो, फ़ोन करने की जगह मैसेज भेजा.

The two often swap freely. की जगह is a little more common when one person or thing takes another's place: आज रीमा की जगह अमित पढ़ाएगा (Amit is teaching today in place of Reema). के बजाय suits a choice between two options.

Examples (5)

  1. चाय के बजाय पानी पीजिए।

    Drink water instead of tea.

चाय is the option you are not choosing.

  2. आज रीमा की जगह अमित पढ़ाएगा।

Today Amit will teach in Reema's place.

की जगह shows one person taking another's place.

  3. टीवी देखने के बजाय कोई किताब पढ़ो।

Read a book instead of watching TV.

देखने is the -ने form of the infinitive before के बजाय.

  4. उसने फ़ोन करने की जगह मैसेज भेज दिया।

Instead of calling, she sent a message.

की जगह also works with the -ने form.

  5. मेरी जगह तुम चले जाओ।

    You go in my place.

With a pronoun, जगह takes the feminine possessive मेरी.

Common Mistakes

  • Using के with जगह.

    चाय के जगह पानी लो।
    चाय की जगह पानी लो।

जगह is a feminine noun, so the linking word is की, just as in की तरह and की ओर.
