एक-एक / दो-दो
One Each, Two Each
A repeated number means each: एक-एक is one each, दो-दो is two each.
How It Works
Repeating a number spreads it over a group, so each person or thing gets that many: सब बच्चों को एक-एक केला मिला। (Each child got one banana.)
The noun follows the number as usual. After एक-एक it stays singular; after a larger number it is plural:
| Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|
| एक-एक केला | one banana each |
| दो-दो केले | two bananas each |
| सौ-सौ रुपये | a hundred rupees each |
| दो-दो की लाइन | a line of pairs, two by two |
Two fixed uses are very common:
- एक-एक करके means one by one: उसने एक-एक करके सारे कमरे देखे.
- एक-एक before a noun can mean every single: मुझे उसकी एक-एक बात याद है.
Amount words work the same way: सबको थोड़ा-थोड़ा खाना दो (Give everyone a little food each).
Repeating the number makes it clear that each person gets that many, rather than the group getting that many in total.

दो-दो की लाइन means a line of pairs.
- उसने एक-एक करके सारे कमरे देखे।

एक-एक करके means one by one.
- मुझे उसकी एक-एक बात याद है।
I remember every single thing he said.

Common Mistakes
Using a plural noun after एक-एक.
सबको एक-एक केले दो।सबको एक-एक केला दो।Each person gets one, so the noun stays singular, just as after एक.
