Level 2Sounds Like ā hai

Past form plus है means has done: वह आया है (He has come).

How It Works

This form, often called the present perfect, says an action is finished and its result matters now. वह आया है means he has come, so he is here now. मैंने खाना खाया है means I have eaten, so I am not hungry.

Build it from the simple past and add हूँ, है, हो or हैं:

HindiEnglish
मैं आया हूँ / मैं आई हूँI have come
वह आया है / वह आई हैhe / she has come
वे आए हैंthey have come
मैंने चाय पी हैI have had tea
उसने दो किताबें पढ़ी हैंshe has read two books

The agreement rules do not change. Verbs like आना and जाना agree with the subject. Verbs that take ने agree with the object: मैंने चाय पी है, because चाय is feminine.

With a feminine plural, only the last word is nasal: पढ़ी हैं, आई हैं.

With कभी, this form asks about experience: क्या आप कभी आगरा गए हैं? (Have you ever been to Agra?). In negative sentences, है is often dropped: मैंने आज कुछ नहीं खाया.

Examples (5)

  1. मीरा आई है।

    Meera has come.

आई agrees with Meera, and है links her arrival to now.

  2. मैं दिल्ली से आया हूँ।

    I have come from Delhi.

    A man says आया हूँ; a woman says आई हूँ.

  3. मैंने अभी चाय पी है।

    I've just had tea.

    With ने, पी agrees with feminine चाय.

  4. रवि ने दो किताबें पढ़ी हैं।

    Ravi has read two books.

With a feminine plural object, पढ़ी has no nasal and हैं carries it.

  5. क्या आप कभी आगरा गए हैं?

Have you ever been to Agra?

कभी with this form asks about experience.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the nasal on both words with a feminine plural.

    रवि ने दो किताबें पढ़ीं हैं।
    रवि ने दो किताबें पढ़ी हैं।

When हैं follows, it alone carries the plural nasal. Write पढ़ी हैं and आई हैं.

  • Making the verb agree with the subject when it has ने.

    मैंने चाय पिया है।
    मैंने चाय पी है।

With ने, the verb agrees with the object. चाय is feminine, so use पी.
