मैंने / उसने / उन्होंने

Pronouns with ने

Level 2Sounds Like mainnē, usanē aura unhōnnē

With ने, वे becomes उन्होंने: उन्होंने खाना खाया (They ate).

How It Works

When ने follows a pronoun, the two are written as one word. Most pronouns simply add ने, but a few change.

PronounWith ने
मैंमैंने
तूतूने
तुमतुमने
आपआपने
हमहमने
यहइसने
वहउसने
येइन्होंने
वेउन्होंने
कौनकिसने

मैं keeps its own form: मैंने, not मुझने. यह and वह change to इस and उस, as they do before any postposition. ये and वे have irregular forms, इन्होंने and उन्होंने, which you simply learn whole.

उन्होंने is very common because it is also the polite form for one person: मैंने माँ से पूछा, पर उन्होंने कुछ नहीं बताया (I asked Mom, but she didn't say anything).

These forms appear only where ने does: with a transitive verb in a completed form. The verb then agrees with the object, not with the pronoun: उन्होंने रोटी खाई. If the object has को, the verb stays in the -आ form: उन्होंने हमें बुलाया.

Examples (5)

  1. मैंने आज सुबह चाय पी।

    I had tea this morning.

    मैं plus ने is मैंने; पी agrees with चाय.

  2. उसने मुझे एक किताब दी।

    She gave me a book.

    वह becomes उसने; दी agrees with किताब.

  3. क्या आपने खाना खाया?

    Have you eaten?

    आप simply adds ने.

  4. उन्होंने हमें शादी में बुलाया।

They invited us to the wedding.

    वे becomes the irregular उन्होंने.

  5. मैंने माँ से पूछा, पर उन्होंने कुछ नहीं बताया।

I asked Mom, but she didn't tell me anything.

Here उन्होंने refers to one person, Mom, with respect.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ने after वह without changing it.

    वह ने चाय पी।
    उसने चाय पी।

Before ने, वह takes the form उस, and the two join as उसने.

  • Building the plural from वे.

    वे ने फ़िल्म देखी।
    उन्होंने फ़िल्म देखी।

वे with ने is the irregular उन्होंने. Learn it as one word.
