ऐसा / वैसा

Like This and Like That

Level 3Sounds Like aisā aura vaisā

ऐसा means like this or such, and वैसा means like that; both change like बड़ा.

How It Works

ऐसा and वैसा belong to the same family as यह and वह: ऐसा is like this, वैसा is like that. The question word कैसा is the third member. Both change like बड़ा.

ऐसावैसा
Masculineऐसा मौसमवैसा कमरा
Feminineऐसी बातवैसी साड़ी
Pluralऐसे लोगवैसे जूते

On their own, they stand for a whole idea: ऐसा मत कहो (Don't say that), मैंने ऐसा कभी नहीं सोचा (I never thought of it that way). Hindi often uses ऐसा where English says that or so.

As adverbs, ऐसे and वैसे mean in this way and in that way: इसे ऐसे खोलो (Open it like this). Two set phrases are worth learning: ऐसे ही means just like that or for no reason, and वैसे at the start of a sentence means by the way or actually.

Common Mistakes

  • Not making ऐसा agree with a feminine noun.

    मैंने ऐसा बात कभी नहीं सुनी।
    मैंने ऐसी बात कभी नहीं सुनी।

    Before a noun, ऐसा changes like बड़ा: बात is feminine, so ऐसी.
