के लिए
For Someone or a Purpose
के लिए means for: who something is for, or what it is for.
How It Works
के लिए tells you who or what something is for. It comes after the noun: यह चाय माँ के लिए है (This tea is for Mom).
With pronouns, use the form ending in -े and do not add another का:
| मैं | मेरे लिए | for me |
| हम | हमारे लिए | for us |
| तुम | तुम्हारे लिए | for you |
| आप | आपके लिए | for you (polite) |
| वह | उसके लिए | for him, for her |
| वे | उनके लिए | for them |
Nouns change as before any postposition: लड़का → लड़के के लिए, बच्चे → बच्चों के लिए. के stays के even after a feminine noun: बहन के लिए.
के लिए also gives a planned length of time: मैं दो हफ़्ते के लिए भारत जा रहा हूँ (I'm going to India for two weeks). With a number and a time word, the noun usually keeps its plain form: दो दिन के लिए, दो हफ़्ते के लिए.
With a verb, use the -ने form: पढ़ने के लिए (for studying). That use, meaning in order to, has its own entry.
