Guessing About a Past Event

Level 4Sounds Like ā hōgā

A past form plus होगा means must have or probably has.

How It Works

When you see a result and guess what caused it, use a past form plus होगा: सड़क गीली है। रात को बारिश हुई होगी। (The road is wet. It must have rained in the night.)

Build it in two steps. First make the simple past as usual, then add होगा in the matching form:

Simple pastGuess
वह आयावह आया होगा
रीना पहुँच गईरीना पहुँच गई होगी
उसने चिट्ठी पढ़ीउसने चिट्ठी पढ़ी होगी
वे थक गएवे थक गए होंगे

All the simple past rules stay. A transitive verb takes ने, and the verb then agrees with the object: चिट्ठी is feminine, so पढ़ी होगी. Compound verbs with गया and लिया are very common here: पहुँच गया होगा, पढ़ लिया होगा.

The same form guesses about a state that comes from an earlier event: आप थक गए होंगे (You must be tired).

With a future time phrase, it means will have done instead: अगले सोमवार तक उसने काम पूरा कर लिया होगा (By next Monday he will have finished the work). The time words show which meaning you want.

Examples (4)

  1. रवि ने संदेश पढ़ लिया होगा, पर उसने जवाब नहीं दिया है।

Ravi must have read the message, but he hasn't replied.

पढ़ लिया होगा guesses an earlier action; ने stays with the transitive verb.

  2. रीना अब तक घर पहुँच गई होगी।

Reena must have reached home by now.

पहुँच गई होगी agrees with Reena.

  3. सड़क गीली है। रात को बारिश हुई होगी।

The road is wet. It must have rained in the night.

The wet road is the clue; हुई होगी agrees with feminine बारिश.

  4. आप थक गए होंगे। बैठिए, पानी लीजिए।

You must be tired. Please sit down and have some water.

थक गए होंगे guesses a state that came from an earlier event.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping ने with a transitive verb.

    वह खाना खा लिया होगा।
    उसने खाना खा लिया होगा।

The simple past rules still apply. खा लेना is transitive, so the subject takes ने: उसने.
