-ता होगा
Guessing About a Habit or Ongoing Fact
-ता होगा means must or probably: a guess about a habit or a general fact.
How It Works
When you see a clue and draw a conclusion about someone's routine, use the -ता form plus होगा: उसके कमरे में बहुत किताबें हैं। वह रोज़ पढ़ता होगा। (There are lots of books in his room. He must study every day.)
Both parts agree with the subject:
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| वह (man) | जाता होगा |
| वह (woman) | जाती होगी |
| वे, आप (men or mixed) | जाते होंगे |
| वे, आप (women) | जाती होंगी |
English usually says must or probably. Despite the होगा, this is about now: वह रोज़ पढ़ता होगा is about his habits today, not tomorrow. Words such as रोज़, हर हफ़्ते or हमेशा show that the guess is about a habit.
With होना, the pattern guesses about a general situation: पहाड़ों में रात को ठंड होती होगी (It must get cold at night in the mountains). Compare अभी वहाँ ठंड होगी, a guess about this moment only. The extra होती makes the guess general.
Other guesses use other forms: वह सो रहा होगा for an action going on now, and वह पहुँच गया होगा for something already done.
