Echo Words
चाय-वाय means tea or something like it. The echo half वाय has no meaning of its own.
How It Works
An echo word stretches a word to cover a loose group: चाय-वाय is tea, snacks, that kind of thing. The echo half (वाय) is not a real word, so it never appears alone.
How it is made:
- Swap the first consonant for
- If the word starts with a vowel, put व in front: आम → आम-वाम.
- Keep the rest of the word, including its vowels and endings: फ़िल्म → फ़िल्म-विल्म.
The pair behaves like the main word for gender, number and postpositions: फ़िल्म-विल्म में, बहाने-वहाने (plural, like बहाने).
The tone comes from the situation. In an offer it sounds relaxed and friendly: चाय-वाय पिएँगे? In a complaint it brushes something aside: बहाने-वहाने मत बनाओ।
Echo words belong to everyday speech with family and friends. Leave them out of formal writing, and pick them up from what you hear rather than building them from every word.
Examples (5)

Would you like some tea or something?
A relaxed offer: tea, or whatever the guest would like.
I don't want tea or anything right now.
The echo word covers tea and anything like it.

Have you eaten anything or not?

The echo half keeps the vowel of the main word: फ़िल्म → विल्म.

Here the echo word brushes the excuses aside.
