आपका आना

Giving an Action Its Doer

Level 4Sounds Like āpakā ānā

आपका आना ज़रूरी है means it is important that you come.

How It Works

An infinitive can work as a noun: आना (coming), जाना (going). To say whose action it is, put the doer before it in the possessive: आपका आना (your coming), उसका देर से आना (his coming late). English often says that or the way: आपका आना ज़रूरी है means it is important that you come.

The infinitive is masculine, so the doer takes का (मेरा, आपका, बच्चों का). Before a postposition, the infinitive changes to -ने and the doer to के (मेरे, आपके).

HindiMeaning
आपका आनाyour coming
उसके जाने के बादafter he or she left
मेरे पहुँचने से पहलेbefore I arrived
आपके आने सेbecause you came

When the phrase describes a feminine noun, the doer often matches that noun: उसकी देर से आने की आदत (his habit of coming late).

Leave the doer out when it is the subject of the sentence: खाना खाने के बाद मैं सो गया (After eating, I fell asleep). Add it when someone else does the action: उसके खाना खाने के बाद मैं सो गया (After he ate, I fell asleep).
