यहाँ तक कि
Even
यहाँ तक कि means even. It points to the case you would least expect.
How It Works
यहाँ तक is literally up to here. यहाँ तक कि means it went so far that, which in English is even: सब हँसने लगे, यहाँ तक कि टीचर भी। (Everyone started laughing, even the teacher.)
The usual order is:
- a general statement: सब हँसने लगे
- यहाँ तक कि
- the surprising item, followed by भी: टीचर भी
The verb is often not repeated, since the first part makes it clear. यहाँ तक कि can also start a sentence and carry its own verb: यहाँ तक कि उसके घरवालों को भी पता नहीं था (Even his family didn't know). With नहीं, भी ... नहीं means not even.
भी alone can mean even: बच्चा भी जानता है. यहाँ तक कि makes it stronger. It is common in stories, the news, and whenever you want to stress how far something went.
Plain यहाँ तक, with no कि, means up to here or this far: आज यहाँ तक पढ़ते हैं (Let's read up to here today).
