चलिए / चलो
Doing Something Together
चलो and चलिए invite someone to do something with you: चलो, खाना खाते हैं (Let's eat).
How It Works
चलो is the तुम command of चलना, and चलिए is the आप command. Both are used to invite someone to do something with you.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| चलो, घर चलते हैं। | Let's go home. (to friends) |
| चलिए, अंदर चलते हैं। | Let's go inside. (polite) |
| चलो, खाना खाते हैं। | Let's eat. |
The second part is a हम sentence in the present, without हम: चलते हैं, खाते हैं. A short polite question is चलें? (Shall we go?).
चलो also works on its own, like come on or okay: चलो, जल्दी करो (Come on, hurry up), चलो, फिर मिलते हैं (Okay, see you later), चलो, कोई बात नहीं (Oh well, never mind).
Choose चलो or चलिए the same way you choose तुम or आप.
