-ने में

In Doing Something

Level 3Sounds Like nē mēṁ

-ने में = in doing: समझने में समय लगा (It took time to understand).

How It Works

में means in. After the -ने form of a verb it means in doing, and it names the activity a sentence is about.

UseExample
time takenयह चिट्ठी लिखने में दस मिनट लगे
difficultyमुझे यह शब्द पढ़ने में मुश्किल हुई
helpआपने हिंदी सीखने में मेरी मदद की
enjoymentमुझे हिंदी बोलने में मज़ा आता है

Agreement. The verb at the end agrees with its own subject, not with the -ने phrase. In यह चिट्ठी लिखने में दस मिनट लगे, लगे agrees with the plural दस मिनट. In मुझे मुश्किल हुई, हुई agrees with feminine मुश्किल.

Time with लगना. This is the most common use. The person who spends the time is not the subject: घर पहुँचने में एक घंटा लगा (It took an hour to get home).

Easy or hard to do. English says hard to read or easy to do. Hindi often uses में here: यह पढ़ने में आसान है (This is easy to read).

For while doing, use -ते समय or -ते हुए instead.
