Where ही Goes

Level 5Sounds Like hī kā dāyarā

ही stresses the word just before it, so its position decides the meaning.

How It Works

ही always focuses what comes just before it. Move it, and the meaning moves too:

SentenceMeaning
रीना ही चाय लाई।Reena is the one who brought tea.
रीना चाय ही लाई।Reena brought only tea, nothing else.
रीना आज ही आई है।Reena came just today.
रीना चाय लाई ही नहीं।Reena didn't bring tea at all.

ही comes after the whole phrase it focuses. With a postposition, that means after the postposition: मैं घर पर ही हूँ (I'm right here at home). With ने it is the same: रीना ने ही बताया (It was Reena who told me).

Inside a verb phrase, ही follows the main verb:

  • Before नहीं it makes the denial stronger: मैं गया ही नहीं (I didn't go at all).
  • With रहा था ... कि it means just about to: मैं निकल ही रहा था कि बारिश शुरू हो गई.

ही does not always mean only. Often it adds emphasis, like English just, right or the one who. Find the word it follows, and the meaning follows from that.

Some short words fuse with ही: यह + ही = यही, वह + ही = वही, यहाँ + ही = यहीं.

Examples (5)

Reena drank only tea; she didn't have any coffee.

    Reena got here just today.

ही after आज focuses the time.

I never said that at all.

ही before नहीं makes the denial stronger.

  5. मैं निकल ही रहा था कि बारिश शुरू हो गई।

I was just leaving when it started to rain.

ही inside the verb phrase means just at that moment.
