Past Ongoing Actions

Level 2Sounds Like rahā thā

रहा था describes an action in progress in the past: बच्चे खेल रहे थे (The children were playing).

How It Works

SubjectFormExample
masculine singularरहा थारवि खाना बना रहा था।
feminine singularरही थीमीरा पढ़ रही थी।
masculine plural, respectfulरहे थेबच्चे खेल रहे थे।
feminine pluralरही थींलड़कियाँ गा रही थीं।

The main verb is just the stem (बना, पढ़, खेल), and it never changes. रहा and था carry the endings.

It often gives the background in a story, next to a short finished event: जब आपका फ़ोन आया, मैं नहा रहा था (I was in the shower when you called). The ongoing action uses रहा था; the event that cuts in uses the simple past.

There is no ने: मैं खाना खा रहा था.

For a habit in the past, use -ता था instead: मैं रोज़ सुबह दौड़ता था (I used to run every morning).

Examples (5)

  1. मीरा पढ़ रही थी।

    Meera was studying.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding ने because the verb has an object.

    मैंने खाना खा रहा था।
    मैं खाना खा रहा था।

रहा था is not a completed form, so it never takes ने.
