क्या + Sentence
Yes or No Questions
क्या आप हिंदी बोलते हैं? asks Do you speak Hindi?
How It Works
To turn a statement into a yes or no question, put क्या at the start. Nothing else moves.
| Statement | Question |
|---|---|
| आप हिंदी बोलते हैं। | क्या आप हिंदी बोलते हैं? |
| यह आपका घर है। | क्या यह आपका घर है? |
English swaps words or adds do: Do you speak Hindi? Hindi keeps the statement as it is, with the verb at the end.
In everyday speech you can also drop क्या and let your voice rise at the end: आप ठीक हैं? (Are you OK?). In writing, the question mark shows it.
The same word also means what. In front of a full statement, क्या asks whether something is true: क्या यह चाय है? (Is this tea?). Before the verb, it asks for information: यह क्या है? (What is this?).
Answer with हाँ (yes) or नहीं (no), or politely with जी हाँ and जी नहीं.

Do you speak Hindi?
क्या at the start; the rest is a normal statement.

The question asks whether the whole statement is true.

Is she a doctor?
Here क्या at the start asks whether this is true; it does not mean what.

Are you OK?
Without क्या, a rising voice makes the question.

क्या हैं आप तैयार?क्या आप तैयार हैं?Keep the verb at the end; क्या is the only thing you add.
How It Connects
Learn This First
A yes or no question is an ordinary statement with क्या in front, so it comes after basic order and to be.
