-ने का / -ने की
Linking an Action to a Noun
-ने का, -ने की or -ने के before a noun links an action to it: पीने का पानी (drinking water), खाने का समय (time to eat).
How It Works
English links an action to a noun with to or of: time to eat, the habit of reading. Hindi uses the -ने form and का, की or के.
| Noun | Phrase | English |
|---|---|---|
| समय (masculine) | खाने का समय | time to eat |
| पानी (masculine) | पीने का पानी | drinking water |
| आदत (feminine) | पढ़ने की आदत | the habit of reading |
| ज़रूरत (feminine) | जाने की ज़रूरत | the need to go |
| जूते (masculine plural) | खेलने के जूते | sports shoes |
The rule is the same as for राम का घर and राम की किताब. का, की or के agrees with the noun that follows. It does not depend on who does the action.
The action can keep its own object: किताब पढ़ने की आदत (the habit of reading books), उससे मिलने का मौक़ा (a chance to meet her).
Useful nouns with this pattern are समय, मौक़ा (chance), आदत, ज़रूरत, तरीक़ा (way) and इच्छा (wish).
Do not mix this up with an infinitive that agrees with its object, as in मुझे किताब पढ़नी है. There the verb itself changes; here only का or की changes.
Examples (5)
- मुझे रोज़ पढ़ने की आदत है।
I'm in the habit of reading every day.
की matches feminine आदत.
- यह आराम करने का समय है।
It's time to rest.
का matches masculine समय.
- पीने का पानी कहाँ मिलेगा?
Where can I get drinking water?
पीने का पानी is the everyday word for drinking water.
- मुझे उससे मिलने का मौक़ा नहीं मिला।
I didn't get a chance to meet her.
मौक़ा is masculine, so का.
- ये खेलने के जूते हैं।
These are sports shoes.
के matches the plural जूते.
Common Mistakes
Choosing का when the noun is feminine.
मुझे पढ़ने का आदत है।मुझे पढ़ने की आदत है।आदत is feminine, so the link word is की.
