-इएगा

Polite Requests for Later

Level 4Sounds Like i'ēgā

The -इएगा form makes a very polite request, usually about a later time.

How It Works

The -इए form is the usual polite request to आप: बैठिए (please sit). Add गा, and the request becomes even softer and often points to a later time: कल ज़रूर आइएगा। (Do come tomorrow.)

VerbPoliteExtra polite

The form never changes for gender or number. Like -इए, it goes only with आप. With तुम, a request for later uses the plain infinitive: कल ज़रूर आना.

You will hear it most in these situations:

  • Requests for later: घर पहुँचकर फ़ोन कीजिएगा.
  • Kind wishes when someone leaves: अपना ध्यान रखिएगा.
  • Set phrases: माफ़ कीजिएगा (excuse me, I'm sorry).
  • Polite offers and questions to a guest: आप क्या लीजिएगा? (What will you have?)

Common Mistakes

  • Using -इएगा with तुम.

    तुम कल ज़रूर आइएगा।
    तुम कल ज़रूर आना।

-इएगा belongs with आप. For a request about later to तुम, use the infinitive form.
