मैं / हम
I and We
मैं (I) goes with हूँ and हम (we) goes with हैं: मैं तैयार हूँ, हम तैयार हैं.
How It Works
मैं means I and हम means we. Each has its own present form of to be.
| Pronoun | to be | Example |
|---|---|---|
| मैं (I) | हूँ | मैं तैयार हूँ: I am ready |
| हम (we) | हैं | हम तैयार हैं: we are ready |
हूँ and हैं do not change for gender: a man and a woman both say मैं ठीक हूँ. Other verb forms do. A man says मैं पढ़ता हूँ and a woman says मैं पढ़ती हूँ. A group of men or a mixed group says हम पढ़ते हैं, and a group of women can say हम पढ़ती हैं.
When the verb makes the subject clear, Hindi often drops मैं or हम: कहाँ हो? घर पर हूँ (Where are you? I'm at home).
In some regions, and often in films, a speaker uses हम to mean I. You will hear it, but use मैं for yourself.
