मेरा / मेरी / मेरे, हमारा / हमारी / हमारे

My and Our

Level 1Sounds Like mērā, mērī, mērē aura hamārā, hamārī, hamārē

मेरा (my) and हमारा (our) change like का: -आ, -ई or -ए.

How It Works

मेरा means my and हमारा means our. Like का, they agree with the thing owned.

masculine, onefemininemasculine, more than one
myमेरा भाईमेरी बहनमेरे दोस्त
ourहमारा घरहमारी गाड़ीहमारे बच्चे

The speaker's gender plays no part. A woman says मेरा भाई (my brother) and a man says मेरी बहन (my sister). The ending comes from भाई and बहन.

Feminine nouns take मेरी and हमारी in the plural too: मेरी किताबें. Masculine singular nouns take मेरे and हमारे before a postposition: मेरा कमरा, but मेरे कमरे में (in my room).

मेरा already contains the meaning of का, so never say मैं का.

Later you will meet अपना (one's own), used when the owner is the subject: मैं अपना काम करता हूँ (I do my own work).

Examples (5)

  3. हमारा घर छोटा है।

  4. हमारी किताबें यहाँ हैं।

    Our books are here.

    Feminine plurals still take हमारी.

  5. मेरे दोस्त तैयार हैं।

Common Mistakes

  • Matching मेरा to the speaker's gender.

    मेरा भाई डॉक्टर है।

भाई is masculine, so a woman also says मेरा भाई.
