-ने लायक

Worth Doing

Level 4Sounds Like nē lāyaka

The -ने form plus लायक means worth doing or fit for doing.

How It Works

Use this pattern to judge whether something deserves an action or is good enough for it.

  • Worth doing: यह किताब पढ़ने लायक है. This book is worth reading.
  • Fit for: यह खाना खाने लायक नहीं है. This food isn't fit to eat.
  • Well enough: अब मैं चलने लायक हो गया हूँ. I'm now well enough to walk.

The action takes the -ने form, and लायक stays the same for every gender and number: देखने लायक जगह, देखने लायक शहर, देखने लायक चीज़ें. You will also hear देखने के लायक, with the same meaning.

After a noun or pronoun, use के लायक: वह इस इनाम के लायक है (She deserves this prize), यह नौकरी मेरे लायक नहीं है (This job isn't right for me).

Don't mix it up with -ने के लिए, which names a purpose. मैंने पढ़ने के लिए किताब ख़रीदी says why I bought the book; पढ़ने लायक किताब says the book is good.
