के आगे / के पीछे

In Front of and Behind

Level 2Sounds Like kē āgē aura kē pīchē

के आगे means in front of or ahead of, and के पीछे means behind.

How It Works

Both phrases follow the reference point: घर के पीछे (behind the house), मेरे आगे (ahead of me), बस के पीछे (behind the bus). The noun changes as before any postposition (दरवाज़ा → दरवाज़े के आगे), and pronouns take the form ending in -े: मेरे पीछे, उसके आगे.

के आगे or के सामने? के आगे means ahead of, especially in a line, on a road or in the direction someone is moving: लाइन में वह मेरे आगे है. For facing something or being opposite it, के सामने is more common: स्कूल के सामने एक दुकान है. Both can describe the area in front of a building.

Alone, आगे means ahead or further on, and पीछे means behind or back: थोड़ा आगे चलिए (Go on a little further), पीछे मत देखो (Don't look back).

आगे can also point to time: आगे क्या होगा? (What will happen next?).
