Level 5

A headline that ends in ရန် tells you something is planned: ကျင်းပရန် means "to be held".

How It Works

Headlines save space. They keep the words that carry the news and drop the rest. Compare a full news sentence with its headline:

What goes: the ending သည်, the past marker ခဲ့, the subject marker သည် and often the object marker ကို. Many headlines also leave off ။.

What stays: places with သို့ and တွင်, the plural များ, and ဟု for a quote. A headline that reports a warning or a claim ends with ဟု and a short verb: ဟု … သတိပေး (warns that …).

The bare verb at the end looks like a command, but a headline is always a report. Read the time from the story: most headlines report something that just happened. A headline with ရန် reports a plan, and one with မည် reports something that will happen.

Headlines are written Burmese, so spoken words such as မှာ, တွေ and နဲ့ stay out of them.

    Only the noun and the verb remain.

    Weather Office Warns of Possible Floods

    ဟု marks the warning, and the verb ends the headline.

Common Mistakes

  • Using spoken မှာ in a headline.

    မန္တလေးတွင် မိုးသည်းထန်စွာ ရွာသွန်း

    Headlines are written Burmese, so "in" is တွင်.
