To a Place in Writing

For a person, writing says ထံသို့: ဆရာထံသို့ စာရေးသည် (writes to the teacher).

How It Works

Writing marks where someone or something is going with သို့. Speech uses ကို for this. The destination comes first, then သို့, then the verb.

သို့ goes with verbs of moving and sending: သွား (go), ရောက်ရှိ (arrive), ထွက်ခွာ (leave for), ပေးပို့ (send). For a person, add ထံ: ဆရာထံသို့.

With မှ, it gives a whole journey: မန္တလေးမှ ရန်ကုန်သို့ (from Mandalay to Yangon). News reports use it for trips by officials and guests: ဝန်ကြီး နေပြည်တော်သို့ ပြန်လည်ရောက်ရှိသည် (the minister returned to Naypyidaw).

At the top of a letter, a name with သို့ means "To": ဦးအောင်ကျော်သို့ (To U Aung Kyaw).

သို့ is only for movement. For a place where something happens, writing uses တွင်: ရန်ကုန်တွင် နေထိုင်သည် (lives in Yangon).

The same word appears in ဤသို့ and ထိုသို့, where it means "in this way" and "in that way".

    The guests traveled to Bagan by plane.

    သို့ marks Bagan as the destination.

  2. ကျောင်းသားများ ကျောင်းသို့ နံနက် ၈ နာရီတွင် ရောက်ရှိကြသည်။

    The students arrive at school at 8 a.m.

    ရောက်ရှိ takes သို့ for where they arrive.

  3. ဦးအောင်ကျော်သို့

    To U Aung Kyaw

    At the top of a letter, သို့ after a name means "To".

  4. စာများကို နေပြည်တော်သို့ ပေးပို့ခဲ့သည်။

    The letters were sent to Naypyidaw.

    ပေးပို့ takes သို့ for where things are sent.

  5. ရထားသည် မန္တလေးမှ ရန်ကုန်သို့ ပြေးဆွဲသည်။

    The train runs from Mandalay to Yangon.

    မှ and သို့ give the whole journey.

Common Mistakes

  • Using သို့ for a place where something happens.

    ရန်ကုန်သို့ နေထိုင်သည်။
    ရန်ကုန်တွင် နေထိုင်သည်။

    သို့ is for going somewhere. Where someone lives takes တွင်.
