ဟု

Quoting in Writing

Level 5

The reported words keep their own ending, often မည် or သည်, before ဟု.

How It Works

ဟု works like quotation marks you can hear. It closes the reported words, and the verb of saying or thinking comes after it: မလာနိုင်ဟု ပြောသည်။ (He said he could not come.)

SpeechWriting
မနက်ဖြန် လာမယ်လို့ ပြောတယ်။နက်ဖြန် လာမည်ဟု ပြောသည်။
လွယ်တယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။လွယ်ကူသည်ဟု ထင်သည်။

The verb after ဟု tells you what kind of report it is.

  • ပြော or ပြောကြား: said
  • ထင်: thought
  • ခေါ်: called, named
  • ကတိပေး: promised

For someone's exact words, use quotation marks: “ကျေးဇူးတင်ပါသည်” ဟု ပြောကြားသည် (said, “Thank you.”).

The reported words keep their own ending. A future report has မည်, and a negative future has မည်မဟုတ်: တိုးမြှင့်မည်မဟုတ်ဟု (that it would not rise).

News uses a fixed closing, ဟု သိရသည် (it is reported that), at the end of many reports. Writing also has ကြောင်း, which reports a fact without its ending.

Keep the whole sentence written. Spoken လို့ and spoken endings do not go with ဟု.

Common Mistakes

  • Using spoken လို့ with written words.

    နက်ဖြန် လာမည်လို့ ပြောသည်။
    နက်ဖြန် လာမည်ဟု ပြောသည်။

မည် and သည် are written, so the quote ends with ဟု.
