မှာ

At a Place

Level 1

The place with မှာ comes before the verb.

How It Works

မှာ works like "at", "in" or "on" in English. It always comes after the place, never before it.

BurmeseEnglish
အိမ်မှာat home
ရန်ကုန်မှာin Yangon
ဒီမှာhere
ဘယ်မှာwhere

Use မှာ for where a person is, lives, works or meets someone. It also marks the owner in a "have" sentence: ကျွန်မမှာ ကား ရှိတယ်။ (I have a car.)

Going somewhere is different. With သွား (go) and လာ (come), mark the place with ကို: ဈေးကို သွားမယ်။ (I'll go to the market.)

မှာ also marks a clock time: ခုနစ်နာရီမှာ (at seven o'clock). Writing uses တွင် or ၌ for the same job, and speech uses မှာ.

  • Putting မှာ before the place, like English "at".

    မှာ အိမ် နေတယ်။
    အိမ်မှာ နေတယ်။
