အတွက်
For Someone or Something
ဘာအတွက်လဲ။ asks "What is it for?"
How It Works
အတွက် works like the English word "for", but it comes after the noun: ကလေးတွေအတွက် (for the children), နှစ်ယောက်အတွက် (for two people).
It covers two meanings:
- Who something is for: အမေ့အတွက် လက်ဆောင် (a present for Mum).
- What something is for: ဒီဆေးက ဘာအတွက်လဲ။ (What is this medicine for?)
Pronouns and family words in the low tone take the creaky tone before အတွက်. It is the same change you see before an owned noun:
| Word | Before အတွက် |
|---|---|
| သူ (he, she) | သူ့အတွက် |
| ကျွန်တော် (I, man) | ကျွန်တော့်အတွက် |
| အမေ (Mum) | အမေ့အတွက် |
| ကျွန်မ (I, woman) | ကျွန်မအတွက် |
ကျွန်မ already has a creaky tone, so it stays the same. Words that end in း, such as ခင်ဗျား and မင်း, stay the same too. When the "for" is a reason to do something, use a verb with ဖို့ (to go shopping, to study).
