ရဲ့
Possession
Many short words show the owner with a tone change and no ရဲ့: သူ့အိမ် (his or her house), ကျွန်တော့်အမေ (my mother, said by a man).
How It Works
Use ရဲ့ after a name or noun to show who owns something or who it belongs to.
| Owner | Burmese | English |
|---|---|---|
| a name | ဇော်ဇော်ရဲ့ဖုန်း | Zaw Zaw's phone |
| I (man) | ကျွန်တော့်နာမည် | my name |
| I (woman) | ကျွန်မရဲ့နာမည် | my name |
| he, she | သူ့အိမ် | his or her house |
A man says ကျွန်တော့် for "my", with the creaky tone ့. A woman says ကျွန်မရဲ့. You will also hear သူ့ရဲ့ and ကျွန်တော့်ရဲ့ in speech.
Set phrases often drop ရဲ့: မြန်မာစာ (Burmese writing), ကျောင်းဆရာ (school teacher).
To ask whose something is, say ဘယ်သူ့: ဒါ ဘယ်သူ့ဖုန်းလဲ။ (Whose phone is this?) The answer puts the owner first: ဇော်ဇော်ရဲ့ဖုန်းပါ။
