ဖို့
In Order to
ဖို့ also works with လို (need to), အချိန်ရှိ (have time to) and မေ့ (forget to).
How It Works
ဖို့ turns a verb into a goal. English puts the goal after the main verb ("I came to study"), and Burmese puts it before: လေ့လာဖို့ လာခဲ့တယ် (to study, came).
| Burmese | English |
|---|---|
| V-ဖို့ လာတယ် | come to V |
| V-ဖို့ လိုတယ် | need to V |
| V-ဖို့ မေ့သွားတယ် | forgot to V |
| V-ဖို့ အချိန်မရှိဘူး | have no time to V |
| V-ဖို့ ပိုက်ဆံ မလောက်ဘူး | don't have enough money to V |
The verb before ဖို့ never takes its own ending. Objects and places stay in front of it: ကားဝယ်ဖို့ (to buy a car).
Writing uses ရန် for the same job: ဝယ်ရန်. In speech, keep ဖို့. Do not mix it up with ဖို့ကောင်း, which describes a feeling: ကြောက်ဖို့ကောင်းတယ် (it's scary).
To ask what something is for, say ဘာလုပ်ဖို့လဲ။ (What is it for?) The answer can be just the goal: စာဖတ်ဖို့ပါ။ (It's for reading.)

Common Mistakes
Using the written ရန် in a spoken sentence.
ဈေးဝယ်ရန် သွားမယ်။ဈေးဝယ်ဖို့ သွားမယ်။ရန် belongs to writing. With the spoken ending မယ်, use ဖို့.
