ကျွန်တော် / ကျွန်မ
Saying I Politely
In everyday speech, ကျွန်တော် is said cha-naw and ကျွန်မ is said cha-ma.
How It Works
English has one word for I. Polite Burmese has two, and you choose by your own gender.
| Speaker | I | my |
|---|---|---|
| a man | ကျွန်တော် | ကျွန်တော့် |
| a woman | ကျွန်မ | ကျွန်မရဲ့ |
Use these words with strangers, older people, teachers, shop staff and anyone at work. Close friends and family say ငါ to each other, and you will learn that word at Level 2.
Burmese leaves out I as soon as the situation makes it clear. After ကျွန်မ နီလာပါ။ (I'm Nila), the next sentence can be just ရန်ကုန်မှာ နေတယ်။ (I live in Yangon).
