Sentence Order
A time word such as မနက်ဖြန် (tomorrow) goes at the start, before or after the subject, and a place word with မှာ comes just before the object and the verb.
How It Works
English puts the verb in the middle: I drink coffee. Burmese saves the verb for last: ကျွန်မ ကော်ဖီသောက်တယ်။, word for word I coffee drink.
| Who | When | Where | What | Verb and ending |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ကျွန်တော် | မနက်ဖြန် | ရန်ကုန်မှာ | သူငယ်ချင်းကို | တွေ့မယ်။ |
That sentence means I'll meet a friend in Yangon tomorrow. Small words such as မှာ (at) and ကို come right after the noun they belong to: ရန်ကုန်မှာ (in Yangon).
Burmese drops the subject whenever the situation makes it clear. ဘယ်သွားမလဲ။ has no word for you, and it still means Where are you going? Keep the verb last even in a short sentence like this.
Examples (5)
- ကျွန်မ ကော်ဖီသောက်တယ်။
I drink coffee.
ကျွန်မ (I, a woman speaking) comes first, then ကော်ဖီ, then the verb သောက်တယ်.
- အောင်အောင် စာအုပ်ဖတ်တယ်။
Aung Aung reads a book.
The object စာအုပ် sits right before the verb ဖတ်တယ်.
- မနက်ဖြန် ကျွန်တော် ရန်ကုန်ကို သွားမယ်။
I'll go to Yangon tomorrow.
The time word မနက်ဖြန် opens the sentence, and the verb သွားမယ် closes it.
- သူ ဈေးမှာ ငါးဝယ်တယ်။
She buys fish at the market.
The place ဈေးမှာ comes before the object ငါး and the verb ဝယ်တယ်. သူ covers he or she.
- ဘယ်သွားမလဲ။
Where are you going?
There is no word for "you", and the verb still comes last.
Common Mistakes
Putting the object after the verb, as in English.
ကျွန်တော် သောက်တယ် ကော်ဖီ။ကျွန်တော် ကော်ဖီသောက်တယ်။The verb and its ending close the sentence. Move ကော်ဖီ in front of သောက်တယ်.
