တယ်

Plain Statements

Level 1

Plans and future events take မယ်, so မနက်ဖြန် (tomorrow) goes with မယ်.

How It Works

တယ် is the most common ending in spoken Burmese. It closes a sentence about something that is true or that has really happened.

SentenceMeaning
ကျွန်တော် ကော်ဖီ ကြိုက်တယ်။I like coffee. (now)
ဒီရထား နေပြည်တော်ကို သွားတယ်။This train goes to Naypyidaw. (always)
မနေ့က ပုဂံကို ရောက်တယ်။I arrived in Bagan yesterday. (past)

Use မယ် for something that has not happened yet. A negative drops တယ် and takes ဘူး: ကြိုက်တယ် becomes မကြိုက်ဘူး.

After a vowel or a nasal, တယ် is said deh. News and books write သည် in its place.

A question also drops တယ် and takes လား or လဲ.
