သူ့ / ကျွန်တော့်
My, His and Her
Women say ကျွန်မရဲ့ for "my", because its last syllable မ already has the short, creaky tone that ့ marks.
How It Works
To say whose something is, put the owner before the thing. When the owner word ends in a low tone, it changes to a short, creaky tone, written with ့.
| Word | Owner form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| သူ | သူ့ | သူ့အိမ် (his or her house) |
(Mom's curry) |
ကျွန်မ is the one exception among the pronouns, because မ already has the creaky tone: a woman says ကျွန်မရဲ့. Words with a high tone, such as ခင်ဗျား, keep their sound and take ရဲ့ when you want to mark the owner.
The same tone change happens before ကို: သူ့ကို means him or her.

Common Mistakes
Adding ့ to ကျွန်မ.

Adding ့ to a word with a high tone.
ခင်ဗျား့အိမ်ခင်ဗျားရဲ့အိမ်ခင်ဗျား ends in a high tone, so it keeps its sound and takes ရဲ့.
