လို့ပြော

Saying What Someone Said

Level 3

The same pattern works with မေး (ask), ထင် (think) and ခေါ် (call).

How It Works

English says "He said that…" and then gives the words. Burmese gives the words first and the verb last, with လို့ between them.

Wordsလို့Verb
မလာနိုင်ဘူးလို့ပြောတယ် (said)
ဘာလိုချင်လဲလို့မေးတယ် (asked)
မှန်တယ်လို့ထင်တယ် (think)
ဘာလို့ခေါ်လဲ (is it called?)

The words keep their own ending: တယ်, မယ်, ဘူး, or a question with လဲ or လား. The speaker usually takes က: ဈေးသည်က… (the seller…).

ဘာလို့ ခေါ်လဲ is the everyday way to ask what something is called: ဒါကို မြန်မာလို ဘာလို့ ခေါ်လဲ။

This လို့ is a different word from the လို့ that means "because", which follows a bare verb with no ending. Writing uses ဟု.

The reported words keep the speaker's own point of view, so ကိုကို မလာနိုင်ဘူးလို့ ပြောတယ် reads as "Ko Ko said he can't come".

Examples (5)

  1. ဆရာက မနက်ဖြန် စာမေးပွဲ ရှိတယ်လို့ ပြောတယ်။

The teacher said there's a test tomorrow.

The words come first, then လို့ ပြောတယ်.

  2. ဈေးသည်က ဘာလိုချင်လဲလို့ မေးတယ်။

The seller asked what I wanted.

    A question keeps its လဲ before လို့ မေးတယ်.

  3. ကျွန်မ သူ မှန်တယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

    I think he's right.

A woman is speaking; လို့ ထင်တယ် reports a thought; သူ means "he" or "she".

  4. ဒါကို မြန်မာလို ဘာလို့ ခေါ်လဲ။

What is this called in Burmese?

    ဘာလို့ ခေါ်လဲ asks for a name.

  5. ကျွန်တော် နောက်ကျမယ်လို့ အမေ့ကို ပြောလိုက်ပါ။

Please tell Mum I'll be late.

A man is speaking; the message comes before လို့.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the verb before the words, as in English.

    ပြောတယ် ကိုကို မလာနိုင်ဘူးလို့။
    ကိုကို မလာနိုင်ဘူးလို့ ပြောတယ်။

The words come first, then လို့, and the verb ပြောတယ် ends the sentence.
