တယ် / သည်
Statements in Writing
The words before it stay the same: ခဲ့သည် for the past, နေသည် for something going on, ပါသည် in polite letters and notices.
How It Works
Written Burmese ends a statement with သည် in the place where speech says တယ်. Newspapers, books, signs and formal letters all use it, and people read it aloud just as it is written.
| Spoken | Written | English |
|---|---|---|
The words before the ending stay the same: ခဲ့ for the past, နေ for something going on, ကြ when many people act, ပါ for politeness.
A sentence ending in သည် uses written words all the way through: ယနေ့ (today), များ (plural), ၏ (of), တွင် (at). Never put spoken words such as ဒီနေ့, တွေ or မှာ in the same sentence.
News reports end many sentences with ဖြစ်သည် (it is) or with ကြောင်း သိရသည် (it is reported that). The word သည် also marks the subject of a written sentence, so one sentence can hold it twice: ဆရာသည် စာဖတ်သည်။
You will read သည် from Level 4 on, and News at Levels 5 and 6 is written in this style. In conversation, always say တယ်.
