ဟုတ်တယ် / မဟုတ်ဘူး
Saying What Something Is
ဟုတ်တယ် on its own means "Yes, that's right", and ဟုတ်ကဲ့ is the polite "yes".
How It Works
To say what someone or something is, end with the noun and ပါ. The word is does not appear.
| Job | Burmese | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| say what it is | ဒါ လက်ဖက်ရည်ပါ။ | This is tea. |
| say what it isn't | ဒါ လက်ဖက်ရည် မဟုတ်ဘူး။ | This isn't tea. |
| ask | ဒါ လက်ဖက်ရည်လား။ | Is this tea? |
| agree | ဟုတ်တယ်။ | Yes, that's right. |
ဟုတ် is the verb to be right, to be so. That is why the negative is မဟုတ်ဘူး, built like any other negative. Add ပါ for a polite answer: မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။
The polite yes is ဟုတ်ကဲ့, and a casual no between friends is ဟင့်အင်း.

Common Mistakes
Putting တယ် right after a noun.
ကျွန်တော် ကျောင်းသားတယ်။ကျွန်တော် ကျောင်းသားပါ။တယ် follows verbs only. After a noun, close the sentence with ပါ.
Wrapping the noun in မ…ဘူး.
ကျွန်မ မကျောင်းသားဘူး။ကျွန်မ ကျောင်းသား မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။မ goes only before a verb. With a noun, use မဟုတ်ဘူး.
