Purpose in Writing
On notices, a sentence built on ရန် asks the reader to do something: မသောက်ကြရန် မေတ္တာရပ်ခံအပ်ပါသည်။
How It Works
ရန် means "to" or "in order to" in writing. The goal comes first, and the action comes after it: ပညာသင်ရန် ဂျပန်နိုင်ငံသို့ သွားသည်။ (He went to Japan to study.)

For a goal that someone else should reach, add စေ (make) before ရန်: ကလေးများ နားလည်စေရန် (so that the children understand). Speech often says အောင် for this.
Notices and letters use ရန် for polite requests. The sentence ends with a formal request phrase:
- ဆေးလိပ်မသောက်ကြရန် မေတ္တာရပ်ခံအပ်ပါသည်။ (Please do not smoke.)
- အချိန်မီ ရောက်ရှိရန် အသိပေးအပ်ပါသည်။ (Please arrive on time.)
ရန် also names a job still to be done: ပြင်ဆင်ရန် ရှိသည် (there are things to fix), ဖြေရန် အချိန် (time to answer).
A very formal goal in speeches and official prose takes အလို့ငှာ. In everyday writing, ရန် is the word you will see most.
The goal always comes before the action, the reverse of the English order. Read the part before ရန် first: it tells you why.

The goal clause with ရန် can follow the subject.
- ဤနေရာတွင် ဆေးလိပ်မသောက်ကြရန် မေတ္တာရပ်ခံအပ်ပါသည်။
Please do not smoke here.
On a notice, a negative goal with ရန် makes a polite request.
- ခရီးသွားများ အဆင်ပြေစေရန် ဘူတာတွင် မြေပုံများ ထားရှိသည်။
Maps are placed at the station to help travelers.
စေရန် names a goal for other people, the travelers.
- ကလေးများ လွယ်ကူစွာ နားလည်စေရန် ဆရာမသည် ရုပ်ပုံများကို အသုံးပြုသည်။
The teacher uses pictures so the children can understand easily.
The teacher acts so that the children reach the goal.
Common Mistakes
Using the spoken ဖို့ in a written sentence.
ပညာသင်ဖို့ ဂျပန်နိုင်ငံသို့ သွားသည်။ပညာသင်ရန် ဂျပန်နိုင်ငံသို့ သွားသည်။သို့ and သည် are written, so the purpose takes the written ရန်.
